Goldstein Residence- Residential
Project Description:
Henry and Paul Goldstein are doing renovations on their ranch-style home. They are big entertainers and want to have their space change with the atmosphere of their parties. The Brilliant Smart Home Systems chosen for the lighting system will allow them to do this. It comes with built-in Amazon Alexa voice control which can help them change their lights from anywhere in the house. They are big music lovers, and the Control Sonos has built-in speakers that allow music to be played without a phone or an app. They want to be able to change their lighting to go with the mood/theme of their party, with smart lighting they will be able to change the colors and brightness of their lights. As far as efficiency, the system can also be used to adjust the home’s temperature and dim the lights according to the sunlight coming into the home.
Since the client has macular degeneration, certain lights will need to be put in place to ensure his safety inside the home as his vision deteriorates. The general lighting needs to be bright and even, so it does not cause any glare. It should be similar throughout all the rooms, so he does not have to adjust to new light levels. Usually, in most homes, LED lights would be used to save on energy usage, but with a client having macular degeneration LED lights are more harmful. There have been studies done that concluded that long-term exposure, even at low levels, to blue light can accelerate the aging of the retinal tissue.
The artwork piece from their honeymoon is a big priority in this design. It will be placed on the east wall in the entry hallway. To protect it from sun damage there will be museum glass placed around it as a box covering all sides. Museum glass is the most effective way to protect the artwork from sunlight, it allows less than 1% light reflection and blocks 99% of damaging UV rays. A cheaper alternative would be plexiglass, which only protects 60% of UV rays. The piece will be lit with a WAC Lighting Reed Swing Arm luminaire, which will allow for accurate color rendering and last a long time.
