McCullen Kitchen Remodel- Residential
Project Description:
Ksney Kole is a 34-year-old female who was born with 100% vision impairment. While attending South Carolina’s School for the Deaf & Blind, Ksney met Liam Kole, a 32-year-old who is 100% hearing impaired due to an infection at the age of 14. Liam teaches sign language at the SC School for the Deaf & Blind & met Ksney when she took his course. The two quickly fell in love & were recently married. The couple have resided with Ksney’s mother, Mary, since that time. Mary is a 68-year-old female who was recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. It is extremely important to Mary that Ksney & Liam can live & function in their home safely. Whilst Ksney & Liam are largely independent, Mary understands she will not be able to assist with cooking, cleaning, & other household chores so she wishes to remodel the kitchen to better suit the needs of Ksney & Liam with the incorporation of specialty equipment geared toward the hearing & vision impaired. Currently, their kitchen works well for all three of them; however, Mary is able to “supervise” & notify Ksney & Liam of alarms, timers, etc. when the range &/or oven are in use or are still hot to the touch. Mary, Ksney, & Liam would like to see a new range/oven with both audio & visual features to ensure safety, as well as other equipment with similar features. The kitchen is currently 188 sq. ft. & they would like to keep that the same. Mary, Ksney, & Liam want to see little to no alterations in the current set up, as Ksney is very familiar with where each item is in the kitchen. Indicators for each workspace & paths of travel would be ideal.
